Frequently asked questions
1. Who is this trip for?
Independent travelers looking for a unique opportunity to explore Peru driving their own car within the safety net of a group and local support/guidance, but with time to explore independently and gain new overlanding/driving/navigational skills as well.
2. Will I be able to enjoy myself if I have to drive for several days?
Absolutely. Our itineraries are carefully designed to allow you to drive just enough hours every day and not be exhausted (average 4-5 hrs. per day). By driving your own car, you will also be able to visit off the beaten path locations and even go on your own day trips with the help of our local team. You will also learn new skills such as navigation, basic mechanics, driving on fairly challenging terrain and more.
3. Is driving and touring in Peru safe?
Yes, very. While cities are always hectic, you will always be guided by our local team to arrive at your destination safely. As long as you keep good driving practices, you will discover it is easy and safe to drive outside of major urban areas (which is where we are 90% of the time).
4. Do I need to be an experienced ‘overlanding’ driver?
No, you do not need any special experience other than being a confident driver for this trip. What’s more, one of the purposes of the trip is to make you a more confident driver and learn new skills. If you are experienced, you can even share your knowledge with the group.
5. Does this trip depart daily/frequently?
No. It only departs on any of the published dates AND as long as the minimum number has been reached OR whenever a certain number of participants are willing to book as one party.
6. Is this a group tour?
Yes, we aim it to be due to the benefits this brings when driving in a foreign country. However, we understand the need for independent exploration which is why you will have plenty of opportunities to safely venture on your own with your vehicle and re-join the group the following day/when agreed.
7. Why can’t I just rent a car and drive myself?
You can, but by joining our organized tour, we take care of important aspects such as a carefully designed itinerary, personal safety, road assistance, a professional tour leader who will work with local guides to make sure you enjoy all places and activities and the confidence to drive in a foreign country while still enjoying free time to explore independently.
8. What type of vehicles are used and who provides them?
We provide medium-sized, automatic SUVs and/or larger 4WD trucks.
9. Is this a guided trip?
Yes. We provide a guide vehicle equipped with a lead driver and a tour leader who both travel with the group at all times (except when provided with opportunities for independent exploration/side trips). We provide an additional support vehicle equipped with a mechanic and recovery gear as well, making a total of two support vehicles and a minimum of three staff driving at the front and back of the caravan/group.
10. What will happen if I have a mechanical breakdown or damage?
There will always be one or more backup vehicles equipped with our own experienced staff to make sure you always get to your destination. As long as you follow the rules of the road and are a responsible driver, you should not have any issues other than minor ones typical of any road trip.
11. Where do we sleep every night?
We include most of the accommodation in mid-range hotels in cities as well as carefully selected lodges and rural homes in the countryside. Please review each day of the itinerary for details.
12. Is food included?
Most is, but some meals are not, which gives you the freedom to prepare your own meal or choose your preferred restaurant when applicable.
13. Are tours and activities included?
Most are. However, we leave room for personal choice as well, meaning that all activities indicated in the itinerary will be provided, but some are optional as well (why should you be forced to participate in something you may not be interested in?). Please review the itinerary for more details.
14. Why is this trip referred to as an “overland” tour?
We travel overland during the day to really get under the skin of the country and not miss anything. In addition, we are certain it is always safer to travel under the sunlight and in a small group. In the near future, we will add more elements of ‘overland’ travel such as rigs and rooftop tents to all vehicles.
15. Is this an all-inclusive trip?
Not quite. While we do include the most important elements such as accommodation, transportation and some meals and tours, some are left for you to choose independently. Why should you pay in advance for a tour/activity you are not interested in?
16. Who is Inca Frontiers and what kind of experience do you have?
Inca Frontiers is an experienced Peruvian tour operator whose owner and founder is currently based in the United States and highly involved in overlanding. We know our country inside out and as locals, we understand our own geography, history and culture to be able to share it all with our guests.
